AUSPINE tree farms are recognised as among world leaders
for tree quality, sustainable yield and recovery per hectare, due largely
to a primary focus on research and development in genetic control and
nursery management practices.

A quality forest begins with the genetic quality
of it’s seed. The Company is a foundation member of the Southern Tree
Breeding Association Inc., a tree genetics research and development body
of international standing. Formed in 1983, the association involves private
and public grower entitles, and the CSIRO Division of Forestry as a research
member. This co-operative effort allows the employment of expert geneticists
and the implementation of an internationally recognised large-scale breeding
program.
The rigorous selection criteria applied ensure
continuing improvements in the genetic quality of seedstock. Second generation
seed now entering AUSPINE nurseries has already boosted growth volumes,
branch quality and stem straightness by 15-20%. With expertise borne of
experience coupled with innovative management practices, optimum results
are readily achievable.

In AUSPINE nurseries, pre-treatment of seed ensures
uniform germination. Close attention is paid to seedling nutritional needs,
while irrigation eliminates moisture stress and weed control promotes
vigorous yet sturdy growth. Seedlings are gradually hardened, using techniques
including root pruning, prior to being hand lifted for transplanting into
plantations.
Almost 3 million seedlings are introduced into
plantations annually, providing for an ever expanding renewable resource
base.
